Traveling Spain & Greece On A Pauper’s Dime With A Purpose

For food any time at McDonald’s is no deal when in Spain. Always go local, for better quality and more quantity at a lower price. While at the bus station we had coffee and crescents for 2 Euros. The bus ride to Salamanca began at 1500 and was pleasantly relaxing. The Spanish countryside was open, with scattered fir trees and other vegetation, interconnecting antique stone walls crisscrossing the open landscape, overlooking abandoned stonewalled farmhouses with numerous working large corn and peanut fields. Strangely I noticed few olive plantations as we traveled.

We arrived in Salamanca at 1730. From the bus station we caught a taxi to our new address at Calle Martin Alonzo Padres, block 3, rows 14/16, a 35 minute walk from downtown, and approximatly15 minutes from the closest bus station. As we walked haplessly along, from the balcony window our hostess, named Marcala, greeted us with waves and cheers. She promptly opened her doors, welcoming us both warmly into our new abode for the next 6 weeks. Her fees at the time were four hundred Euros per month.

Soon as we made our way inside our new room, dropped off our bags, and made ourselves comfortable, Marcala brought in a large bowl filled with fresh cherries. She showed us where the kitchen, bathroom, and living room was located, informing us that we were welcome to use them. Marcala continued speaking with us, assuring us that breakfast would be served up fresh in the morning when we awoke.

When she had finished speaking with us, she hurried us both along, inviting us to catch the bus with her where she would show us the avenue to the college where my wife was attending, and the locations of the market. She kindly gave me the keys as we rode past the market, then exiting at a cathedral library somewhere on a main avenue. She parted with us, to my surprise since my Spanish translations are sometimes off, and we both were soon on our own way.

The wife and I walked down several streets in Salamanca, not knowing where we were or how to come back. We stopped at the local grocery market and purchased a weeks groceries for 10 Euros, including two beer and two liter boxes of red wine purchased for 2.84 Euros. The lady had informed us that if we become lost, then she lived at the last bus stop on line thirteen, at Huerta Otea, near the bus station at Advansa. She kindly informed us that her house was the only one with a pool in the entire area. After more than two hours of walking, asking questions, and searching, we finally found the residence again, but shame on us for not retaining the address with phone numbers in case we ever become lost.

Finding specific bus pickup points can be somewhat of a challenge, since most are only triangle shaped six feet tall poles, with the specific number of the bus stopping located at the bottom of a list with many additional bus numbers. All of this occurred on the day of June 17, 2019.

June 16, or the third day of our trip, began as usual with us arising at around 1000, for sandwich made with more bread and the meat purchased earlier, and McDonald coffee. Once breakfast had been completed, we head off on a walk for several blocks toward the local historical museum on Tribunal de Cuentas street. In this museum one may savor paintings of Madrid from the past, along with details in regard to many additional sights in Madrid, and do so completely for free.

Unfortunately for me, my cell phone was lost from my rear pant pocket on this day, so we were deprived of an enduring camera document of our travels. This situation would have never occurred, had I placed the phone inside my front leather bound travel bag. A temporary misplacement of valuables is often all that it takes for them to vanish.

We hopped the subway Metro, taking it from Cuenta Cimaros Street near our Hostel, to Mendez Alvaro. The wife wanted to eat at a small deli immediately adjacent to the Hostel where we stayed before leaving, but we had no time remaining. After pulling our over stuffed suitcases up many flights of stairs and riding different escalators, we finally made it to the bus station where we purchased our tickets to Salamanca for the following day. The price we paid at the time was 21 Euros.

Once on Mendez Alvaro street we rode the subway line again to Estation de Arte. While there we toured the Parke de Retiro for the remainder of our outing. Our last grand adventure for the day was to attend services at the Cathedral de Angelica there at the park across from the Mueso Debrado. While there at the church we participated in communion services. Around 1400 from there we caught the #7 Metro line to Canal street, then the #2 line back to Cuenta Cimaros.

The time has been well spent, and I still have time to seek out work for next year. Hiring for teachers in Spain occurs the same months that it does in the US. A US citizen must also obtain a working VISA, but doing so shouldn’t be all that difficult. Once one has maintained employment for 3 ongoing years, he is eligible to apply for citizenship, according to the wife’s college instructor. For Americans, living in Spain at least 6 months out of the year would have its advantages.

We both could hardly contain ourselves as the plane finally landed on the runway at Madrid airport at 1200, after 10 hours flying time nonstop from Atlanta, Ga. We made our way from Madrid airport by subway to a street called Calle de Almanza 12, where a hostel located at this address is known as the Las Vegas Hostela. At the time of this writing the rooms were 55 Euros for a single, complete with a queen sized bed and its own bathroom.

A hostel building from the same company a hundred yards down street has rooms for twelve Euros less, but one is required to share the bathroom. The situation is tolerable and one that I have done many times over in the past, but I didn’t feel that the twelve Euros in savings was worth the loss of our personal privacy.

Our first hitch came about when the hostel didn’t have a record of us booking a room for three nights. This situation meant that we had to pay again for our three nights stay, hurting a poor backpacker’s traveling budget, along with giving insult to his constant dedication in the philosophy of thriving while traveling on the cheap.

Usually rooms in Europe are charged per person, but we honestly received a deal at this particular hostel, since the 55 Euros covered both the wife and myself, only demanding 25.5 from both of us; so in the end our unfortunate situation was not that bad. We had also wondered if the situation wasn’t by design from the hostel manager, who may have been making a double hit for quick cash, but we had no way of knowing the truth. Because of this fact, we both made a mental note to secure our receipts for the three nights that we paid for. We anticipated using these receipts later on to recoup our lost money from ASAP tickets once we returned to the states, whenever that was destined to be.

After we secured our room we both rested for a few hours, then set out around 1500, walking down the main street to the Grand Via Plaza only a few blocks down from where we were presently staying. While we could have taken the tourist Double Dutch bus for 26 Euros per person, seeing many more sights, getting off at desired places for the hour and productively spending the entire day; there is also something attractively intimate with the area found in taking a casual walk that simply can’t be replaced by any other means of transportation. Besides all of that, taking a walk in the cool breeze felt very pleasant. Don’t forget to bring along a wide brimmed adventurer’s hat in company with a bandanna folded and tied around one’s neck, if constant bright sunlight is going to sap energy or cause more chronic problems.

We made it to the Gran Via by 1700 and paused to watch a magic performance in the plaza area. By conclusion of the show, the time was around 1900. We both paused for a spell in the plaza area, watching a variety of skits being performed all around us while we both rested on very comfortable wooden benches found throughout the park, then headed along on our way. We made it back to our room via the Metro line by 2300 hours, when darkness had just blanketed the landscape. The most efficient manner of travel is to purchase a card loaded with the 10 Euro Metro or bus travel pass.

On day two of our stay in Madrid, we rose from bed around 1100, then walked down to the local food market where packaged meats and sliced bread could be found for less than one Euro each. This meat packed between two slices of bread made for a fine breakfast, washed down with some espresso coffee purchased at the local McDonald’s for a Euro per cup. As always, its much more efficient to pack along one’s own coffee from home, or to purchase a jar of Nescafe instant at the local markets for 4.5 Euros, if one can find a method of heating the water. It also doesn’t do any harm to pack along twenty or thirty packs of instant oatmeal, as I did. An all round multivitamin for adults should allow any extended stay traveler to safely reduce food intake to the barest minimum possible, while still preserving one’s health.

Once breakfast had been completed we both began a walk back down to the Gran Via, toward the Plaza Mayor, and the Plaza Espania. While the Gran Via certainly has its positive appeal, the Plaza Mayor and the Plaza Espania are must see areas for all visitors to Madrid.

The Plaza Mayor was once a huge palace and parade area for a number of important Spanish Kings. The elegance from the time period may still be witnessed today. There is a cathedral there worth visiting for its artistic quality, and is free to enter. Teachers, the handicapped, and the unemployed may visit the entire plaza area free of charge. All others can do so for a meager 8 Euros per person.

The Plaza Espainia is a huge nature park on a hill overlooking the city of Madrid. Here one may snap some outstanding photographs, or he might choose to visit a restored second century B.C. Egyptian cultist temple to Debod. Admission is always free up to the moment of this writing.

The wife and I spent the entire day taking walks along the plazas, sipping the many varieties of beer on tap, and chatting casually among ourselves. As usual, we made an entire day and evening of it, returning to our room at around 2300. I finished off our evening by making one last trip to the local food market adjacent to the hostel, where I purchased a full liter of red vino wine for a single Euro. The wife tends to favor Sangria, which can be purchased at two liters a container for only 2.5 Euros.

What we soon discovered once we were on the ground in Salamanca was that one could literally rent in advance a nice apartment there for mere 350 Euros. One could spend more, to suit his desire in elegance, but anything beyond basic practicality without any sacrifice to comfort , was what interested us. Power and internet could be accessed for 20 Euros. I didn’t ask about water, but it couldn’t have been much beyond 10 euros. In other words, for around 400 Euros one could access a comfortable apartment with utilities in Salamanca, Spain.

A six month rental paid out in advance would equal 2400-3000 Euros. With only another 3000 in Euros saved one could get by in relative comfort and ease. Such realities might be a retired persons dream come true, since with only 12000 Euros he could live well in an almost crime free environment. Other creative individuals might find their own use for this type of information as well. Maybe at a later date I could give a jobs report to accompany the type of information recorded above.

This move would give one a central point of location in the country at large. From there a person could easily travel to better destinations in Spain, such as Pamplona, and other nearby destinations. While in Pamplona a party atmosphere is prevalent, one could also attend the bullfights, and other traditional events. Madrid, the capitol city, is also in relatively close approximation. For a mere 85 Euros one can purchase a ticket to Seville and Grenada. For 130 Euros he can purchase a three day and night stay there, complete with shelter and food included. Beware of petty thieves while in Barcelona or Madrid. I lost my cell phone there, as you may recall.

This short story is a tale of the underdog rising into the position of chief. The setting involves a scene during the early middle ages. A man has been insulted and is challenged to a duel down by the fork on Catsle Creek. The entire kingdom has met to witness this fight to the death. As the story unfolds, the reader learns that the challenger is the king, himself, of the entire province. The person being challenged is a commoner, more than likely of very low economic status. His mentor is a clairvoyant prophet who has lived a hermit’s life deep down in Ziegal forest. Through this prophet the insulted young duelist is trained for combat. In the end he fights, wins, and is crowned king of the province. At the end of the tale the reader learns that the king has attempted to insult the wife of this commoner, who stood in his way, and this was the reason for the king striking him with the glove and posing a challenge to duel. The story concludes with the land being purged of its corrupt inhabitants, and righteousness being once again restored.

Traveling In Spain On A Pauper’s Dime With A Purpose

While I am a huge advocate for planning well enough in advance to travel in the greatest luxury possible, I am also a greater supporter for taking advantage of an opportunity to live adventure when it arrives, no matter what the circumstantial challenge. Most often these uncomfortable scenarios occur where idealistic desires clash with one’s personal realities involving issues of a financial nature. When these rather imposing situations occur, having access to current on-the-ground information may well prove to be of more value than any savings found through bridling back on allowing these personal desires their fulfilling gratification. In most cases a workable plan is still very doable; such is the town criers latest news!

For more than a year the wife and I contemplated another great escape to Spain, and a new venture into Greece. Our perfect opportunity arrived when she was doing her last summer in Salamanca to complete the Masters Associate program for international language educators that she had initiated the year before, where I remained stateside engaged in a different sort of thrill plan. The entire MA program cost a meager 5200 Euros at the time of this writing.

Without hesitation she called Esperia, an online booking program for travelers, who promptly connected her with ASAP tickets. Through them she booked our plane tickets, our hostel rooms, and secured our general travel itinerary. While she was actually engaged in the classroom schedule, we would be staying in an apartment booked through Airbnb, breakfast and WiFi was advertised as being included.

My own personal objective in being with her was to basically give moral support to her efforts while I searched for a twelve month offshore teaching gig. Since we both had planned to work, we didn’t dare allow that specific aspect to prevent us from doing our share of sightseeing and playing around in general. In our case mixing work and play was to our rich advantage, rather than to anybody’s detriment.

On the fourteenth of June, 2019, we booked a rental car from our town of origin, dropping it off at the local airport. We flew stateside with Delta airlines to Atlanta, Ga, then from there directly to Madrid, Spain. The cost of my plane ticket at the time was 800 dollars, American. I paid for all of this travel while working in a grocery store chain called Ingles, officially employed as a stoker.

I had often wondered exactly how I was going to find the time to make this adventure happen, but when the manager on duty fired me for taking a Christmas holiday that I was scheduled to have off anyway, this unjustified misfortune completely solved all of my problems in regard to traveling. Now I had unlimited time for adventure and general fun, and money was not-a -problem since I had already saved and paid for the extended stay trip in pieces prior to my unfortunate position. Certainly this thankless manager would have a much more difficult experience replacing me as a productive employee, than I would ever have replacing my loss of his dead end, low wage job, when I felt like searching for one!

How is that for dealing with the death of America’s production base over the past 35 years, and all of the outstanding positions of employment that went down the drain with it, eh? When President Trump finally resolves this ever growing crisis, we Americans then might actually have the incentive to remain at home and give our valuable time over to hard labor. Until that new era of prosperity arrives, we can flash ’em all the equidistant finger, and put the magic carpet high on the next available cloud to Seraph Island, and the little known mysterious fortune that lies tucked away inside those luxuriant limestone caverns found in mountains enveloped inside its own tropical oasis. You know, the one with the sweet nectar cesspools, where the native girls dressed in clothes stitched from immaculate carnations and roses love to swim or lie around.

I am dropping a note for today and many more to come, in hopes of selling my latest product, Rowdy Living Literature, and to speak about Rowdy Living Press. What a sad day it will be indeed, when Americans simply exist underneath the same tyrannical, disenfranchising boot heel that the rest of the world does; the boot heel of the banking dynasties, their banks, the corporations that have grown up around them, and the government officials/”representatives” these entities pay off to do their wicked bidding against the same population body who voted them in while expecting different treatment.

Rowdy Living Literature is simply stories told by people who have lived life to the fullest in spite of any imposing stone walls placed before them. Many of these tales are far out accounts, others are embellished greatly, and some hardly at all. I actually met Jerry Rushing on a hunting trip way up in the mountains a while back. I slew a nice sized ram. He was hunting wild hogs. He began his working life at the age of twelve running moonshine. Before that he had helped his father and grandfather man the still and cook the mash. In time he quit running shine and began working for Hollywood as a stunt man, driving, crashing cars, having near death escapes. He took his money and purchased an extremely large tract of land in Davie County, NC, where he built his own home and eventually opened his own hunting facility. His daughter, Darlene Tarlton, still runs the taxidermy part of it, if I am correct in saying that.

Unfortunately Jerry Rushing passed recently, if I understand the information correctly online here. His legend will live on far into the future, so grab this book when you get the chance, and have a desire to read about a real life American hero from our own time. There may be no doubt that Jerry Rushing was filled with Rowdy Living stories of high adventure in America that few others in our own day will ever have the chance to experience. Most can ride up into the TN mountains and fantasize about doing it at the many distilleries and tourist traps. Of course what stands in between dreaming about something and actually doing, is one’s choice of raw action taken. As always, there exists a risk factor, but the RF and having a healthy dose of fortitude is what separates Rowdy Living Literature from all other genre’.

Farmers sitting around underneath the shelter of local tobacco barns tended to tell these magnificent stories. Hunters in a wood side camp site also have great stories to speak of; as do some construction workers, especially those who predated citywide cameras and the internet era. Active soldiers, and ex-veterans from the Vietnam era on backward, often have heroic tales of glorious finds, hand to hand combat experiences, and the sharing among comrades of rich booty, long since forgotten. Somebody needs to recount these marvelous tales of outstanding conduct in our own time. Allow that record keeper to be myself and this staff here at Rowdy Living Press.

Somebody somewhere has to keep a log of these tales as the one’s who once told them gradually fade away. An increasingly authoritarian socialist platform, the frequency of terrorism, and the distrust of American citizens at large by government officials are gradually killing this breed of freeborn individual out. I also have great aversions to this ideology of a “global community,” and all nations existing therein as mere states. The world has been warming for more than 8000 years now. All of this has long been proven in the fossil record. That warming is what got us out of the last ice age, for crying out loud here! Evidently the earth is moving gradually closer to the sun, and has been for at least 10000 years now. When the earth rotates around the sun, it moves in increments inward, or outward. This fact is the reason why there is a fossil record of tropical climates in arctic areas, and a record of hard freeze in areas where no arctic conditions presently exist; such as in the south eastern US, for one example among many.

This claim of global warming being man made is a lie imposed by the same banking dynasties that are laboring hard for the corruption economically, socially, in a patrimonial sense, along with the outright enslavement of all mankind. The American citizen base really does need to divorce itself from the Federal Reserve! There again, as a person and an author, one may observe clearly why I am a maverick in the political agenda being proselytized by the western powers that be in our own time. Native Europe, and America at large, should closely observe the manifesting political events of our time.

How could the banking dynasties, the corporations, and the government at large, benefit from millions of alien immigrants pouring onto our shores? Could these millions seeking to secure a section of our hard won golden pie/resource base, be used to actually transform our entire national landscapes into an entity designing for our own future bondage? Should we be anticipated to resist? Are the powers that be actually seeking to exterminate us? Are we witnessing a new type of elimination program, where propaganda in company with government agenda is utilized to promote inbreeding; hence patrimonial and cultural destruction? If so, how might this scenario be contested and combated? If any resistance to this phenomenon is occurring at all, why are we not seeing it?

These are all highly important questions for individual readers at large to ask. I do not seek to give answer, but only dare to ask the questions others refuse or fear to. Most exist in fear for their career, their community status quo, their liberty in a legal sense. I, on the other hand, and those in my position, have no established career, no status in any established community, and no fear of legal claims; so therefore, myself and those in my position, may freely speak the hard blood and guts truth, in company with our own minds, as we feel led to do. This fact of consideration is what sets myself and my genre’ of literature apart from all others.

Yes, there are many days in the life of a freebooter that everything seems stuck in the mud. The sad truth is that most of real life falls underneath this category. Such is the reason why outstanding experiences are retained for years, and retold when the occasion is right.

Many people are good at creating their own entertainment when these times arrive. Those who have the best experiences during these times, tend to be individualist, who fear not for safety, career, reputation, nor community opinion. These are those individuals who live for God Almighty, and the only secular laws they observe are the US Constitution, which is the only true law of the land. These people simply don’t possess the time to coddle the poo-boy environmentalists, animal rights groups and views, zoning officials who are working with the local tax boards, the interests of business entities or corporations, and others who in reality are seeking to enslave him.

When one of these people decide their home needs a new room addition, they arise with the sun to build one, never asking anybody anything. If he needs food, he gets out and raises it, gathers it, etc. When he needs to earn a living he throws up a shanty, fills it with pickled and fresh vegetables, home processed meats, east coast wild coffee, dry beans, rice, nails, factory canned goods, cloth, dry goods, and whatever you may. He slaps a sign on the front of his shack and calls it the so and so family general store, etc. The people come to him because of his high quality margin.

Having this type of liberty is what created the freeborn USA, and many other places around the globe. These areas did not lose this freedom until the large corporations took over. The individualist, however, has vowed unto himself that he will endure, regardless of how intimidating the future is set to become.

Few among his insiders or outsider competitors possess this type of determination, and will only cower down to the whims of their corporate led masters. The few that make these types of decisions have very interesting tales to speak of, as a result. This fact is only a single part of what makes Rowdy Living Literature so unique from all other genre’.

The man of action is pursued by enemies, large and small, using the latest high tech equipment. As a result he often haunts darkened hollows and subterranean complexes far outside our familiar environment, encountering a series of mystical beings, lost souls, and others whom we are commanded by society to reject, having a series of modern paranormal experiences in the process. His enemies seek to marginalize his life boundaries from jealousy and outright negative motivations, are often numerous, and in their pursuit cause the man of action to engage in some interesting, yet very bizarre battles on a variety of differing fronts.
